Completed the 3rd phase…The HMS De Rue Surdeval detail book is completed. I began the study in October of 2018 as to learn new commands in the 3D modeling software. The focus model was a 1700 era ship. The study then turned to a mini project that led to more research and of course more models. I learned many new commands and techniques using edge modeling and symmetry modifier. The ship model became a bit heavy in polygons. However, the focus was not to optimize the geometry, as I focused more on techniques. As I continued the project models, I found that the feather was a bit tricky and will require a bit more study. The name of the ship comes from our family history Richard De Sourdeval (Battle of Hastings 1066), the name in time progressed to De Surdeval, De Rue, or De Reuda, or De Routh. So, I found it fitting to call my fictitious ship The HMS De Rue Surdeval. The design brought many questions: Is the scale correct?, How many souls will the ship sail?, How many cannons?, Does the ship design fit the era?, What in the world is a Capstan? I fashioned the design from a Spanish Galleon, due to the greatness of that particular type. As my particular design was not a galleon, I did find that Christopher Columbus (1492) also liked the galleon design and his ship was modified to reflect it, as his ship was smaller and classified as a Caravel. As far as crew, I found this number: 87 crew of the Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria. So my numbers on souls aboard the De Rue Surdeval seem appropriate. (*Note: The Nina is a nickname to the Santa Clara). As far as cannons, I found that the HMS Bellona (1760) had 74 guns and 650 officer and crew. I was amazed by that. My model harbors 22 guns and 8 swivel guns. Just to throw some info. out: A modern Aircraft Carrier crews 6,000 personnel. Floating City, they call it.
I really enjoyed this project as it became way more than I had set out for. I did tie it to one of my other fiction books, the Atomic Clock. You will see Admiral Knaut for the first time. Many are looking for him, as he is looking for them…
